If your video upload failed or is taking too long, this guide will help you identify the problem and get your message uploaded successfully.
⥠Quick Fixes
Try these common solutions first:
- Check your internet connection - try loading another website
- Refresh the page and try uploading again
- Try a different browser (Chrome usually works best)
- If on mobile, switch to WiFi instead of cellular data
Common Upload Error Messages
"Upload Failed"
Usually caused by internet connection issues or the file being too large.
"File Too Large"
Your video exceeds the maximum file size limit. See compression tips below.
"Unsupported Format"
The video format isn't supported. Convert to MP4 or WebM format.
"Connection Lost"
Your internet disconnected during upload. Check your connection and retry.
Video Requirements
Make sure your video meets these specifications for successful upload:
1. Slow or Stuck Upload
Video uploads can take time, especially for longer recordings. The upload speed depends on your internet connection's upload bandwidth.
A 5-minute 1080p video (approximately 200MB) takes about 3-5 minutes to upload on a typical home internet connection. Slower connections or larger files will take longer.
- Use a wired connection - Ethernet is more stable than WiFi
- Close other apps - Video calls, streaming, and downloads compete for bandwidth
- Avoid peak hours - Internet can be slower in evenings when many people are online
- Move closer to your router - If using WiFi, signal strength matters
- Keep the tab active - Don't close or navigate away from the upload page
Keep the upload tab open until the upload completes. Closing or navigating away will cancel the upload and you'll need to start over.
2. File Too Large
If your video file exceeds 500MB, you'll need to reduce its size before uploading.
- Record at 720p instead of 1080p - Still great quality, much smaller files
- Trim unnecessary footage - Cut out pauses, mistakes, or off-topic sections
- Use video compression software:
- Windows: HandBrake (free)
- Mac: HandBrake or built-in QuickTime "Export As"
- Online: CloudConvert or Clideo (for smaller files)
- Split long videos - Consider breaking very long messages into parts
Compression Tips
- Use H.264 codec for best compatibility and file size
- Aim for 720p resolution if file size is an issue
- Audio bitrate of 128kbps is sufficient for speech
3. Unsupported File Format
Bovella supports the most common video formats, but some devices create videos in formats that need to be converted.
- Download HandBrake (free, available for Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Open your video file in HandBrake
- Select "MP4" as the output format
- Choose a preset like "Fast 720p30" or "Fast 1080p30"
- Click "Start Encode"
- Upload the new MP4 file to Bovella
4. Upload Keeps Failing
If uploads consistently fail, there may be a browser or network issue.
- Clear browser cache - Go to browser settings > Clear browsing data
- Disable browser extensions - Ad blockers and VPNs can interfere with uploads
- Try incognito/private mode - This disables extensions automatically
- Update your browser - Make sure you're using the latest version
- Try a different browser - Chrome generally has the best upload support
- Check firewall settings - Corporate networks may block large uploads
5. Upload Progress Resets
If the upload progress bar resets or starts over, this usually indicates a connection interruption.
- Use a more stable internet connection (wired if possible)
- Disable sleep mode on your computer during upload
- Keep your laptop plugged in (sleep settings may differ on battery)
- Avoid using other high-bandwidth applications during upload
6. Mobile Upload Issues
Uploading from a mobile device can be more challenging due to network variability.
- Use WiFi - Cellular connections can be unstable for large uploads
- Keep the app/browser open - Don't switch apps during upload
- Keep screen on - Some phones pause uploads when the screen turns off
- Check storage - Ensure you have enough free space on your device
- Consider using a computer - For large files, desktop upload is more reliable
If uploads keep failing, make sure to save your original video file. Don't delete it until you've confirmed the upload was successful and your message appears in your Bovella account.
